Unemployed Workers Conference & Jobs Fair

A conference, jobs and training fair for local the unemployed. We have invited key policy makers, employers and training providers, including from the GLA (Jennette Arnold), Hackney Council (Guy Nicholson), local community groups (including a bicycle repair workshop) and training providers (Hackney Community College).

It's free to attend, and lunch is provided.

Through workshops, debates and case-studies, this conference aims to highlight the concerns of the unemployed in Hackney and look for solutions.

We aim to develop a process whereby local employers work with training providers to provide the unemployed with training to acquire the skills necessary to apply for those jobs that are around.

We also want to develop a 'manifesto' for Hackney's unemployed which we will put to candidates.

Unemployed? Want to work with other unemployed to create a voice for Hackney's unemployed? Come down and get involved.

Hackney Unites - Unemployed Workers Project

Who we are:

A non-profit organisation, we aim to address the practical everyday needs and interests of the ‘economically inactive’ in the borough. We are local people working together for our common benefit.

We meet every Friday between 11am and 2pm at the community Hall, Navarino Mansions, Dalston Lane E8 1LB. We often have a guest speaker, and we have a shared lunch. We are an open and inclusive group and we are welcoming to new people.

We have no relationship with the Job Centre or any government organisations, and are totally independent.

We seek to network with community organisations in the borough

What do we hope to achieve?
We share ideas and experiences and break down the isolation that comes from unemployment.
We are planning a conference on 26th October 2011 for the unemployed in Hackney (with a jobs and training fair).
We want to show that unemployed workers have skills that need to be utlised
We are exploring whether we can create a ‘skills bank’ of local unemployed.
We hope to identifies ‘pathways’ into paid employment and personal development
We aim to create a local voice for the issues that affect unemployed people (who are often invisible to the mainstream)

We are not affiliated to any political group.

The Hackney Unemployed Workers Project is an initiative of Hackney Unites and is funded from a Grassroots grants
